About Amanda

I’m an accredited humanistic psychotherapist and I take those core skills, experience and values into my coaching, mentoring and non-managerial supervisory role with third sector CEOs. I am based in the City of London and also coach private sector clients who work at CEO and senior executive levels in media, law, finance, design and publishing. My career has taken me in and out of the private and third sectors as I have a business background in events management, hospitality and advertising.

I coach and mentor third sector CEOs to have robust, healthy and boundaried professional lives. Using warmth, good humour, focus and clarity, my aim is to support you to achieve your full potential as a leader in the sector. Some of my particular interests include the CEO/Chair dynamic, helping CEOs to build confidence and self-belief, supporting CEOs through complaints and litigation and managing challenging relationships.

Experience in the sector:
In the late 1980s I co-founded The Food Chain and was a member of the Board and lead cook for five years. I worked for Carers UK in support, developmental and outreach roles for seven years and as a trainer and therapist for The Princess Royal Trust for Carers for more than a decade. I work in a consultative role for third sector organisations solely and with get2thepoint for clients such as ACEVO. I write a regular column in Third Sector Magazine as The Career Coach. I currently volunteer with the City of London Police as Vice Chair of their Independent Advisory Group and am also the IAG representative on their Confidence & Equality Board.

How Tough at the Top was born:
For a number of years I had three CEO friends who didn’t know each other. I learned over time that their issues and challenges were very similar. One day, instead of continuing to give them friendly support on my own, I decided to get them together for a meal. I was astounded by the amount of ground that was covered, ideas shared, decisions reached and the support and goodwill that flowed. Although I knew that there was a good deal of networking and support for third sector CEOs in the form of conferences and training, I also understood that there was far less opportunity to simply discuss how things are with peers: I had been told by many CEOs that the busiest place at any conference was the tea table because it was the one place that people had to talk together. This gave me the initial idea for Tough at the Top which I started, with support from ACEVO, in 2005.
